Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a form of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It is characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal cells in the bone marrow, which then spill out into the bloodstream. These abnormal cells, known as blasts, do not develop into mature blood cells and crowd out the healthy cells.
AML usually arises from mutations in the DNA of developing cells in the bone marrow. The exact cause of these mutations is often unknown, but certain factors can increase the risk of developing AML.
