Cholangiocarcinoma is a type of cancer that originates in the bile ducts. The bile ducts are tubes that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine. Cholangiocarcinoma can occur anywhere along the bile ducts, both inside and outside of the liver.
There are different types of cholangiocarcinoma, including intrahepatic, perihilar, and distal. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma develops within the liver, while perihilar and distal cholangiocarcinomas occur outside the liver.
