Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. It is more common in older adults and occurs when normal cells in the lining of the esophagus undergo changes and grow out of control.
There are two main types of esophageal cancer: adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Adenocarcinoma usually develops in the lower part of the esophagus and is often ****ociated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Barrett's esophagus.
