Intraocular melanoma, also known as eye melanoma, is a rare and potentially malignant type of cancer that develops in the cells of the eye. It occurs when the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the eye start to grow uncontrollably and form a tumor.
This type of melanoma most commonly affects the uvea, which is the middle layer of the eye. Uveal melanoma can occur in the iris (the colored part of the eye), ciliary body (the part of the eye that helps focus the lens), or the choroid.
