Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive type of skin cancer that typically develops in the cells that provide the sense of touch in the skin (Merkel cells). It usually appears as a painless, firm, pink or red-colored nodule on the sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the head, neck, and legs.
The exact cause of MCC is not well understood, but it is often linked to a virus called Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV).
