Metastatic cancer refers to cancer that has spread (metastasized) from its original site to other parts of the body. When cancer cells break away from the primary tumor and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system, they can travel to distant organs and form new tumors. Metastatic cancer is considered advanced or stage IV cancer because it has spread beyond the primary site.
The most common sites for cancer to metastasize include the bones, liver, lungs, and brain. However, cancer can potentially spread to any part of the body.
