Childhood astrocytoma is a type of brain tumor that occurs in children and is derived from astrocytic cells, which are a type of glial cells in the brain. Astrocytomas commonly develop in the cerebellum or brainstem, but they can also form in other areas of the brain.
These tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) and can vary in grade, which indicates how quickly the tumor is growing and how likely it is to spread to other parts of the brain.
