Myeloid dysplastic syndrome (MDS), also known as myelodysplasia, is a group of disorders characterized by abnormal development of blood cells in the bone marrow. It is a type of hematological malignancy.
In MDS, the bone marrow does not produce enough healthy, mature blood cells. The abnormal cells that are produced are often defective and cannot function properly. This leads to a decrease in the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
