Pheochromocytoma is a rare type of tumor that arises from the chromaffin cells in the adrenal glands. These cells produce and release hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenaline, which are responsible for the body's response to stress.

Pheochromocytomas can occur in either the adrenal glands or in other locations, such as the sympathetic ganglia. Most of these tumors are benign, but about 10% are malignant.
