The annual tournament is typically played right after Christmas, however, the tournament was canceled partway through competition in December of 2021 due to COVID-19. Instead of skipping over the tournament in its entirety, the IIHF elected to restart the World Juniors in August. It's going to be a mixed bag of players heading to Edmonton for the international games. Players that were eligible for the tournament in December remain eligible to play, despite the fact that they may be too old based on the normal guidelines. However, a number of players may not be attending as they get ready for the upcoming NHL season. William Eklund, the No. 7 pick from the Sharks in 2021, recently announced he would not participate in the tournament, even though he was tabbed on Sweden's initial roster. It certainly will have a different feel to it, with it being played during the summer for the first time in history, but with no other hockey going on, it's an opportunity for all eyes to be on the future of the NHL. Start date: Tuesday, Aug. 9 End date: Saturday, Aug. 20 After the tournament was canceled in December of 2021, the IIHF is trying again for the 2022 edition in August. It will start on Aug. 9 and run for 12 days to Aug. 20. The group stage starts on Aug. 9 and will take place over the first seven days of the competition. The quarterfinals will all be on Aug. 17, the semifinals on Aug. 19 and the tournament will conclude with the bronze and gold medal games on Aug. 20. In the group stage, teams earn three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win, one point for an overtime lo s and no points for a regulation lo s. The top four teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, where the matchups are determined by seeding. They will cro s over between groups for these games: 1A vs. 4B, 1B vs. 4A, 2A vs. 3B and 2B vs. 3A. The teams that advance to the semifinals will be reseeded. The winners of the semifinals will face off in the gold medal game. The losers will play for bronze. Ru sia was removed from the tournament after the IIHF instituted a ban on all Ru sian and Belarusian national teams from competing in IIHF play after Ru sia's invasion into Ukraine. Latvia, who was the Division IA runner-up, was promoted to replace Ru sia at the tournament. Belarus was the Division IA winner, but was not promoted due to the ban. No teams will be relegated, so the same 10 countries will compete again in December at the 2023 tournament. Where is the 2022 World Juniors? Location: Edmonton, Alberta Venue: Rogers Place The 2022 World Junior Championship will take place in Edmonton, Alberta. All games will be played at Rogers Place, home of Craig Biggio Jersey the Oilers. It is the first time since 1988 that there are not multiple host cities. In December of last year, when the 2022 tournament originally commenced, it was set for both Edmonton and Red Deer. The games were split between Rogers Place and the Peavey Mart Centrum in Red Deer, home of the WHL's Red Deer Rebels. MORE: Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the 2022 tournament was scheduled to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden. However, it was changed to Edmonton in September of 2020, due to the restrictions put in place with COVID-19. Instead, Gothenburg was rea signed to the 2024 tournament. This year marks the fourth time Edmonton will host World Juniors games, having previously hosted in 1995, 2012 and 2021.
